John Spertus, MD, MPH

John Spertus, MD, MPH, FACC is an invasive cardiologist and Director of Cardiovascular Education and Outcomes Research at the Mid America Heart Institute. He is a Professor of Medicine, University Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Spertus is an outcomes originated researcher specializing and quantifying patients experiences of their illness. He has developed the Seattle Angina Questionnaire, the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire, and the Peripheral Arterial Questionnaire. Each of the disease specific health status measures quantifies patients functioning, symptoms and quality of life. Dr. Spertus' work has introduced these instruments for outcomes in clinical trials, as measures of health care quality, and as aides in patient care. He is active in an numerous national committees including the ACC, AHJ, Task force on performance measures, the ACC clinical data standards committee for congestive heart failure, the HCFA expert panel on acute myocardial infarction, the cardiovascular expert panel for the performance measure coordinating counsel, the America Heart Association expert panel in Outcomes Research and health care quality, and is past chair of the annual Scientific Forum on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke. Dr Spertus is currently involved in multiple grants and clinical trials and has substantial teaching responsibilities at UMKC. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Tufts University and attended medical school at UCSF and received his internal medicine, cardiology, and master's of public health training at the University of Washington.
