Finding Information. Support Services.

Organizations and services exist to help people deal with their own or a loved one’s condition. The following types of resources may be helpful to you:

Find a support group
Support groups can be helpful for people facing a difficult medical condition. To identify support groups in your area, you can contact your local hospital. Disease-specific organizations such as the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or American Diabetes Association may also have listings of support groups.

Get individual counseling
Individual counseling can also be helpful. Many psychologists and social workers specialize in counseling people with health or medical issues. To locate a counselor in your area, contact your local chapter of the American Psychological Association or the National Association of Social Workers. You may want to ask these organizations for a list of providers who specialize in health or medical counseling.

Learn about hospice care
One of the hardest decisions a family can face is arranging for end-of-life care for a loved one. The Hospice Association of America is a helpful organization that can help you to decide when to enlist hospice care. Many hospice programs generally provide psychosocial services and counseling in addition to help with managing physical pain.
